If you open an event by double clicking in the calendar, Outlook presumes
that you want to schedule an Event, which defaults to a reminder time of 18
hours. If you open a new appointment using the File->New->Appointment, it
presumes you want an appointment which will use your default reminder time.
Look in F1 help for definitions of each of these items.
