Man-wai Chang to The Door (24000bps)

The Antec TruePower New 650W was bought on 08 Oct, 2009!

Smoke came out of the power supply. When I removed it from the case,
some light yellow liquid came out. Fortunately, the motherboard was not
harmed.

So... what could that light yellow fluid be?

Capacitor electrolyte leaking out? What manufacturer is Antec getting
their PSUs made by these days?

BTW, isn't electrolyte from a capacitor acidic? My skin was not burnt....

A more important question is why you chose to multipost (bad) your message
instead of crossposting it.

Something an "over the shoulder" spare possibly won't have when the
occasion next arises. Power supplies are like a flat tire or dead
battery to an otherwise mechanically sound car. Something that's
going to happen, regardless a good value for a respected brand.
Yellow sounds much better than one I had "leaking" radiation
(adversely affecting a tape drive).

Not had Skybuck round your house have you? :-)

I took the power supply to Antec's Hong Kong distributor Altech. Altech
replaced it. But when I opened the box, the power supply does NOT have
that black "Warranty voidded if opened" sticker, which was present in
the unit that exploded.

Does this mean anything bad?

It might be sulfuric acid because that's often used in electrolytic
capacitors. However a study done a few years ago:

www.dfrsolutions.com/pdfs/2004_Electrolyte_Hillman-Helmold.pdf

said some Taiwanese caps had pH levels > 7 while the Japanese caps
they tested measured ~4:

I wouldn't touch any of the fluid. Maybe you can talk Antec into
paying for return shipping if you complain about the spilt fluid and
the costs of decontaminating your home to make it safe again for your
children, your dear, dear children. ;)

What brand is the bad cap -- Ltec, Fuhjyyu, OST, or CapXon?
Considering that fluid came out, I suspect it's one of the big high
voltage caps.

I now feel better about replacing all the caps in my Antecs with
Nichicons and Sanyos.

JonnyGuru.com or HardwareSecrets.com should have that info, but I
think they're mostly from Delta (BasiQ, Earthwatts) and, after an
absence, Channel Well Technology.

It go a warranty sticker in it so I could not open it. The unit had now
been replaced by a new one by Antec's Hong Kong distributor.
Interestingly, the new one does NOT have a sticker!

Then why did one buy Antec in the first place? :)

Could mean it's a refurbished unit, which doesn't tend to bother me.
I have just emailed Antec US asking for more information about that sticker.

In the US a couple of years ago, Antec sold several of their early
NeoPower (by Seasonic) power supplies with broken stickers, and the
company acknowledged this and didn't void the warranties.
Then why did one buy Antec in the first place? :)

They were only $5-15 US, after rebate, sometimes including the case.
Some of them included the infamous SmartPower II series, known for
blowing caps in the +5Vstandby circuit. Here's one of them (Koshin),
along with the extra-fat Sanyo that replaced it:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2569/4018203956_f703644672_m.jpg

At least there was adequate room for it, unlike the other fat caps I
had to install in the output rails.

Here is the reply:

Trouble Ticket ID: 204947
Description: RMA missing "Warranty Voided If Opened" sticker
Comment By: Eric Chan
-------------------------------------------------------
Comment: Hi Man-wai,

Please bring it back to Altech and have them put the warranty seal back
on for you. Otherwise, they might think you are the one who opened it.
Please do this ASAP.

Thank you
Antec Support Team
