My 5536 install over the beta and XP

After imaging both my xp and vista beta partitions I tried the dreaded
upgrade. Over the beta, outside of taking a long time it was smooth, no
problems at all except having to reinstall my photosmart 7150 with the vista
7400 drivers, installing AVG since Avast is broken, and resetting up the
newsgroups.
Now for the ugly, the very very ugly. I then tried installing over XP....
total disaster, no dual boot, IE was hosed and wouldnt even open up, it
tried to open OE instead of Mail, MCE crashed left and right... bsod's on
tools.... it was so bad I gave up and imaged xp back withing a few hours of
the fiasco. My take, no way will this be ready for upgrading over XP anytime
soon.

Gee, it looks like MS QA missed something on in-house testing...mmmm. I would
find it hard to believe that the issue can be resolved, by the time rtm
arrives. I can see alot of lawsuits from upgraders in a few months. And of
course the plantiffs will be bought by vouchers, and the story will hardly
see the light of day. Why do we put up with this b.s.?

And why can't the courts order MS to release it's strangle hold on
publishers/developers, so software can be made for mac and/or linux too?
*sigh*

MS, you're killing my love for tech, damnit.

I've tried the upgrade install on Vista build 5384- it did take
a long time, about 80 minutes for me. Gets to the last screen,
"Please wait while Windows loads your desktop for the first time".
And it just kept restarting after that. Would never finish loading.
The compatibility check that Vista runs did not flag any programs
that needed to be removed. The only thing that I had installed that
may have caused the problem was Trend's beta AV. I ended up doing
a clean install... that went perfect and installed in 20 minutes.

A few weeks back I tried an upgrade install with Beta2 on another
computer with WinXP Pro. Hardly had anything installed on that
machine, basically just the OS. The upgrade worked quite well.

The upgrade install is suppose to be much better than in the past.
It is actually a "clean" install, where the image is put down and then
the programs you had installed are put back on. If someone were
to ask me, I would tell them- as in years past- do a *real* clean install.
I'll try another upgrade install when RC1 comes out. But, if I were installing
this on an important/production machine, I would do a clean install.

I haven't even installed an AV, yet. The only things I've installed on build
5536 are WLM, Java, Skype, and Firefox. I want a bare bones OS when
I go to do the upgrade install of RC1. Of course, most users are going to
have computers that have all sorts of stuff installed. For many, I think the
upgrade install is going to be a nightmare- unless, Microsoft does something
about it. For instance- during the upgrade install, when Vista finds a program
or incompatibility- give the user the ability to remove that program right then,
from the install procedure. I would also unplug every device that is attached
the computer, except for the mouse, of course. After install, plug them in one
by one. Although, I did this for my last upgrade attempt and it made no difference.
