I have a newly configured Win2K Server with DNS Server
enabled, This DNS Server is sitting in my DMZ Zone and
has a public IP address, I this alslo acting as a SM TP
Gateway which is supposexd to forward all queries to my
exchange server.

I believe I've set up my zones correctly with reverse
lookups also. And I've set mx records for my server.

But when I go to command prompt, I get an eerror message
when I try to look up info for my MX record

Can someone guide me or help me make sure that my MX
record are configured properly.

Thanks

You don't give us a domain name so we can't really check it but if you go to
www.dnsreport.com you can run the check a give us the results if something
is wrong.

Thanks for replying

The problem is the following the domain is speedware.com
but when you perform a dnsreport on that guy it. The MX
info that comes back is my ISP's MX records pointing to
speedware.com.

My problem is, We will no longer be using this ISP, so
I've configured A new DNS Server that will be hosted here
at my location.

Now the config on my local DNS Server seems OK, but when
I go to command prompt and do nslookup and search for an
MX on my local machine it comes back with an error
message .

Be aware, if you are planing to host your own DNS for the public domain you
need at least two DNS server if local access is required.

That being said, can you post the "error"
Just to help a little when you do the lookup add a trailing dot to the
domain i.e. example.com. , this will keep any names in the search order from
being appended.

One question here for Barry, did you goto your registrar and change the
nameserver address to your server(s)?
Did you create an MX record?
Only pointing to your DNS server and not any others (such as an external,
such as your ISP's)?

You will need to contact your registrar for your domain name and update the NS records to point at your server. The registrar
will require two DNS servers though. Once you have control of the DNS domain, then the MX records should show your SMTP
server. As for the reverse lookup zones, these are typically owned by your ISP. Unless your ISP is really really nice or you are
paying them huge amoust of money, they will not delegate this out to you. You will need to have them register the reverse
lookup PTR record for your SMTP server.
