Hello, i've configured a new domain on my windows 2000 server. I am able to
connect to www.mypage.com and mypage.com, I am also able to ping
mail.mypage.com but whenever i try to send e-mail to the domain I get this
error
Sorry, I wasn't able to establish an SMTP connection. (#4.4.1)
I'm not going to try again; this message has been in the queue too
long.

Any help would be appreciated

Are you running an SMTP server on that address?
Did you configure it (e.g., if you are using IIS-SMTP)?

When I run dig nothing appears for the MX record or for the mail alias, or
the www alias, however web brwosing works fine on the website. When I
configured the DNS zone all i did was right click in the zone and "add new
host" as opposed to "add new alias." Was that wrong?

Thanks
Mike Jones

I know that everything is fine with the exception of the MX record. I have
multiple domains on my exchange box, all receiving e-mail with the exception
of this one. The only difference is that I am hosting the DNS for this box.

Thanks

Did you create the MX as an alias or did you use a blank host entry pointing
to the actual A record (as it should be done)?

Also, since you're hosting mail for that domain, assuming Exchange 2k (or
any other mail server), did you configure it to be authorative for receiving
mail for that domain name? (In Ex2k, it;s done in the Recipient Policy)?

I am confused Mike. If you want an MX record, why not create one? Do you
have a question about creating one?

Sorry I did create the MX record in the zone, but when I perform a dig it
doesn't appear.

Thanks

Are you digging @particular server?

dig @dns1.register.com LearnQuick.com MX

Doing this, versus just a general query, helps separate
whether the particular DNS server has the record from
situations of broken replication, broken recursion, and
misconfigured clients (dig using the default DNS for the
client.)

This is roughly equivalent to:

nslookup -q=mx learnquick.com dns1.register.com

I don't see a way to perform a dig on that website

What do you mean? I thought you were having trouble with an
MX record and presumably an email server?

My example:
....digs out MY MX record for the LearnQuick.Com domain
(there also happens to be an A record/website with that name,
but that isn't even at the same address and is irrelevant to our
MX issue.)

The point is when doing dig (or nslookup) to try the SPECIFIC
server that you are configuring, versus the default, versus (sometimes)
a recursive lookup from the public Internet namespace.

For the latter you can use "DNSReport.com" (and DNSStuff.Com)
-- watch out there is NO 's' on report.

In Mike Jones <[email protected]> posted their thoughts, then I offered
mine

Can you let us know what the domain name is and we can test it from our end?
Thanks
