mute button

my mute button on the side of my lap top does not work, it has since ive had it and now it does not. ive checked for the things that i know to check. also my lap top does not display the green bars when i turn up or down the volume. This option is checked to display. can you help?
 
The mute button is a hardware issue, so you'll need to ask the company that
made the laptop.

Windows XP doesn't display green bars when you turn up the volume. You'll
have to ask the company that wrote the program you're using.
