I look after a system for some not very PC aware friends.
I have recently upgraded the system unit - P2 to P4. OS is
Windows XP Prof.. Unfortunatly I am unable to get their
Scanner working on the new system. Well that's not actually
true. I can get the scanner working, but not while the
software/drivers for the Canon IXUS 40 camera is
installed. It would seem that it's one or the other, but
not both.

The embarassing thing is that it all worked just fine
on the old system...

Anyone have any thoughts on this...

Many thakns,
Roy

Yes - I have latest software for both Camera and Scanner...
From the USA this link is slow to connect try several times before giving
up. (It is a good link)

Yes - I have the latest Mustek drivers.
Windows XP is a very different OS that Windows 98 SE.

Yes - I have only been using Windows XP Prof and have the
correct drivers.
How is the scanner and camera connected? USB, SCSI, Parallel port?

Both devices are USB devices and I think they both use the
Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) interface.
If both devices are USB do not have both connected to USB
at the same time. USB is hot switchable, which means that you
can plug or un-plug at any time.

Hmmm - That rather seems to defeat the object of a USB!

That might be an option if I were able to run both items from a
USB Hub on the desktop. However the Scanner refuses to work
at all through a hub. No idea why - have tried a number of hubs.
The scanner gets it's power from the USB - probably something
to do with that...

So to plug/unplug the scanner would need a head under the desk,
round the back of the system unit with a torch job.... Not sure I
could sell that to the "customer" :-)

Hmmm - that's an interesting KB article. However it relates to two
Scanners being attached.. I don't have two scanners... I suppose
the camera is acting like a scanner. Interesting that they both use the
WIA interface. I can't find any articles that might help though...

What I don't understand is that it all worked fine with the old
P2 system.

I guess thats progress....

Many thanks,
Roy

What about installing the TWAIN interface instead. TWAIN is better for
Scanners.

at the same time. USB is hot switchable, which means that you

Hot switching is the object of USB. You can change devices at any time
without rebooting the computer.

Scanners almost never work through a hub, Not enough power and the port
address gets changed.

The article does cover two scanners, but sometimes two devices on USB will
conflict with each other.

The only way to determine if there is a conflict between devices is to
disconnect one and try one device at a time, if each device works correctly
when it is the only device connected to USB then there is conflict between
the two.

Sometimes you can change the USB port that a device is connected to and the
conflict will disappear.

Usually one does not have to physically unplug the wire from the rear of the
computer. USB devices have a connector at the device itself, so you unplug
the cord at the device.
Unless you have the scanner sitting behind the computer, you can unplug the
USB cable from the scanner.

For the camera, I use a USB (A to A) extension cable and have the end of the
extension cable hanging within reach, so that I can plug in the camera
cable.

I have three USB devices that I use regularly, but I seldom use more that
one device at a time.

Here is another interesting article:
One or more USB devices may not work after you start your Windows XP-based
computer

Carl,

Yes it did get scrambled... damn computers.. :-)

but I already unscrambled it in my response !!!

Carl,

Again, many, many thanks for your excellent help with this...

Yes - I would love to - I was expecting the Mustek installation
stuff to that - so how do I do this? What software do I need and from where?

Yes - I remember the early days of USB development. "It would stop all
the conflicts that we experienced with the "Serial" interface - Oh yeahh.."

to sort this out is beyond us it seems :-)

Yes - but you wouldn't expect to have to do a restart if you want to use one

be proud of if I had designed/implemented it:-(

Yes - more food for thought. Seems like it would be wiser to avoid all
USB devices in general because there are so many "gotchas"...

Yes - I would love to - I was expecting the Mustek installation

where?

The TWAIN software that most likely came with the scanner. Or the Software
that is on the Mustek German web site.
You have never given the model number of the scanner so, I can not check the
site to see if there is a TWAIN driver on site.
http://www.mustek.de/eng_/start_english.htm

Click on Drivers.

If you did a NO, NO. (Plugging in the scanner to Windows XP before
installing the software).
Then you have to go into the Device Manager and remove the WIA driver for
the scanner, You may need the scanner connected and turned on for it to show
in the Device Manager.

Device Manager is found at Control Panel>System, Hardware tab Click Device
Manager button.

After removing in Device Manager, unplug the scanner from USB, reboot the
computer. Install the correct software, reboot the computer. Now plug in the
scanner and turn on.

In Windows XP never connect a device before installing the correct software.

Windows XP has some built in drivers for some devices, but WIA is a poor
substitute for the manufacturers TWAIN software.

Hmm.. - how do I change the USB port of a device?

By changing the plug (cable) in back to another connector. Most computers
have 4 USB connectors on the rear of a computer, each connector is a
different USB port.

Ahh.. Not on the Mustek - it's hard wired into the back of the scanner...

Does the Mustek have a power switch?
If so turn off the power when not using the scanner.
Now - that's a good idea... Maybe I can do something like that..

USB devices in general because there are so many "gotchas"...

USB is the best thing that was invented for computers in a long time. Most
of the bugs have been ironed out in XP SP2. If you do not have Windows XP
Service Pack 2, I suggest you go to Windows Update and Update to SP2.

Mnay thanks for your help. I have some more things I can try...

I would be very interested to understand how to use theTWAIN interface
