I had recently been attacked by some spy and adware that hijacked Internet
Explorer. I have cleaned it all off my computer but now if I type, for
example www.microsoft.com I get an error message back saying site not found
or invalid address. If I type http://www.microsoft.com it works fine. Any
ideas on how to fix this?

Hi Carl :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Adding HTTP:// to web addresses

You can check these keys and edit them, if necessary, as follows:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\
DefaultPrefix default="http://"

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\
Prefixes
"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"

or.............

Repairs the corrupted or altered (spyware) HTTP prefixes
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/RepairDefaultPrefix.reg

or........

IE will not connect to a web page without manually typing http://

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Using Regedit, browse to the following registry key and make sure the noted
setting is correct:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoComplete]
"Append Completion"="yes"

also see the following values:

"Use AutoComplete"="yes"
"AutoSuggest"="no"
