Must remove Windows Messaging (Exchange32) temporarily

K

Kento

Greetings,
I need to temporarily remove Windows Messaging. I
realize it's a shared file and removeal could cause
conflicts, but it's existence is preventing me from
uninstalling Outlook97, and in effect, Office97.

I could just delete my C:/Program Files/Windows Messaging
folder, but that seems unwise.

I would also like to know how to reinstall it once my
issue is resolved, even if it just involves pulling it
from my XP Pro disc.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Kento.

Hi Kento,

"Windows Messaging" is not part of Windows XP. As such, simply rename the folder if it's a
problem.

If you mean the "Windows Messenger" folder, you can uninstall it by doing the following.
Close down Messenger if it's running (right click the messenger icon in the notification
area/system tray and click close). Then click the start button, then click Run and type in
(copy-paste if you like):

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,

If you wish to reinstall Windows Messenger, you can do so here:

Greetings Jonathan,
Thank you again, but I've bindar dundat already.
(You're advice was well received yesterday, when I
mistook Win. MessaGING for Win. MessenGER). What Win.
Messaging appears to be is the MS Exchange32 Server app.

What I need is to remove it (a shared file) so that I may
in turn remove Office97/Outlook97. When I attempt to
completely uninstall, it immediately asks about Win.
Msgng. (a shared file) and if I'd like to Keep or Remove
it or all Shared Files.

I'm about to try deleting it, and hope no conflicts arise
later. Could this be the same bothersome program which
pops up grey box advertisements about which everyone
complains (and in turn mistakes for Win. Messenger?)

Thanks again.
Kento.

Hi Kento,

I believe you can remove it with no ill effects -- Windows XP won't let you remove a file
critical to its operation, unless you turn off the System File Protection feature.

This is not a part of Windows (including those 'Messenger Service' popups) -- this was
installed by Office.

True enough Jonathan,
But the issue is that office will always look for Win.
Messaging under Outlook (because effectively, it IS
Outlook) when being uninstalled. So I see this may not
be an issue for your particular specialities, though
you've been of great help! If you could recommend a
specific newsgroup/MVP who may have an uninstall solution
for me, I'd appreciate it!
Thanks again,
Kento.
