It takes 10 minutes to boot up my system. An IBM 2.8 Ghz with 1 GB ram.

After it boots it takes another 4 minutes to log in and use my computer.
The
performance of the CPU runs from 80% to 100%. I have installed McAfee
And things run a little better, but not much.

What should I be aware of or do before I flatten my O.S. and start over
from scratch?

Thanks in advance!!!!!

Have all the drivers at hand, and immediately after the basic XP install,
install the motherboard/chipset drivers. Then install other basic device
drivers, then get Windows updates. Then, install your apps and utilities.

Have you checked with Process Explorer to see what is actually using all the
CPU cycles?

Make sure that you have the 25 digit Product Key before you format the

Thats a fact!!!

I bought my operating system and treat it like gold. Not like in
the bad ol' days while going to collage :-)

You could save a hell of a lot of time and just repair your existing OS

start by running msconfig anfd take out unneeded apps.

chances are all you need there is your virus checker and firewall

I have one suggestion on how to help "prevent" this re-install
"headache!" Once the OS is reinstall and all your applications are
install, consider "imaging" the hard drive to an "image file," either
on a external hard drive or CDs/DVDs. That way, your will only
request to restore the image to get a "working : XP install.

Also, when yoiu do the re-install, do not have this PC connected to
the network / Internet and re-install anti-virus software before re-
connecting.
