music skips in presentation

WhenI add music from a file, the music skips foward as if
You were to fast foward on a cd. What's causing this?
 
Have you checked ...

current/updated audio card driver?
current version of DirectX?
corrupted MCI settings?
hardware acceleration?

These are where I would start looking for solutions.
