i am recording from an amplifier (vynal) to computer
does anyone know of a free tool i can use to crop the beginning and end of
the recording to get rid of any overruns

Sorry. I don't know of a FREE utility but I use Roxio Easy CD Creator 5
Platinium. It has a tool called SOUND EDITOR and you can load the entire song
and see the stereo tracks, you can EDIT single words or parts of a word, I
use it to CUT the Blank intros and outros so I don't use soace for blank. You
are able to Increase or decrease volumns etc etc.
I will tell you this, I love the program but ROXIO (Sonic) has the WORST
support and I also have Roxio EASY MEDIA CREATOR 7.5 and it will NOT capture
video or allow me to save to a sub directory on my second Hard drive, I have
been trying to get them to help me or answer me or any thing for well over a
week. NOTHING, their support on a scale of 1 to 100 is about a 2. For Audio,
you should have NO Problems, the version 5 I mentioned above is cheap now and
you will not be able to use it to burn on anything newer than December 04.
For editing I don't need to update CD Drivers so I am fine with it for my
Audio editing and capturing from Vinyl to Hard drive. IT has normalizers etc
etc. workss great and is easy. Actually Roxio was OK it is SONIC now and they
suck.

Doesn't provide the software you are recording with provide that option?

A freeware tool would be Audacity, tools that you have already paid for
could have come with your sound card (like Creative WaveStudio), burning
suite (like Nero WaveEditor, or Roxio that Craig mentioned) or video editing
software.

Me, I happen to use GoldWave.
