On a new installation, the boot procedure is hanging just after the
'Starting Windows' progress bar completes. If I start in 'Safe Mode with
Command Prompt' from the F8 menu it shows the last thing loaded as being
Mup.sys.
Reading through various MS Knowledge Base articles informs me that Mup.sys
is 'Multiple UNC Providers', but I'm not certain if Mup.sys is at fault or
something which follows. MS KB suggests installing and running the 'Recovery
Console' which would be fine if I could. I don't seem to be getting to a
point where I'd be able to install the Recovery Console due to this problem.
Even then, there doesn't seem to be any explanation of why disabling Mup.sys
would solve the problem.
Any ideas on where I can go next ?
The system is as follows:
CPU - AMD XP2400 - Thoroughbred core, 266 MHz FSB.
M/board - Gigabyte GA-7VRXP with VIA KT333 chipset. Have tried 2 different
ones.
PSU - have tried various, currently using branded 550w dual-fan model.
Memory - 2 x 512Mb DDR333 / PC2700 Crucial - have tried other makes.
Graphics - Matrox G400 AGP, but have tried Matrox Mystique 220 PCI instead.
Floppy - Have tried ALPS, Sony or none at all.
CD / DVD - Have tried Samsung, Creative and none at all.
HDD - Have tried Seagate 40 Gb, 60 Gb and 80 Gb models.
The above is about it ! Have tried disabling Sound, USB, LAN and RAID in
BIOS.
Did try swapping the XP2400 for a Duron 650 and the system booted. Went back
to the XP2400 and the fault returned.
Did try installing Windows Me using a different HDD and the system worked
fine with the XP2400 - but I need Windows 2000 not Me.
Totally puzzled on how to solve this problem now - any ideas anyone ?
TIA
Kevin.
