multiple XP installations

I have XP Professional and Microsoft Office 2003 installed on my desktop.
Could I install that same software on a laptop and still use it on my
desktop? How would that affect updates? If I lost my hard drive and had
to re-install the OS on my desktop, would not Microsoft provide the Service
Pack updates for that? Am I licensed for only one computer at a time? I
suppose what I want to do is illegal, but I thought I would ask.

No to Windows XP. You would need to purchase another copy (if you can find
one). As far as Office is concerned, it depends on the EULA for the version
you bought. Read it. If it was OEM that came with the computer, no.

If you bought XP off-the-shelf and not a disk which came with your computer (OEM),
then you physically could install it on both PCs but it would be illegal and
Microsoft would scourge the galaxies in mortal pursuit of you...

Probably yes, for Office (check what it says on your license). No, for
Windows.

Retail would probably work okay....for 30 days.
