I reformated a drive that had a bootable Window XP and
everything works correctly. Additionally I have different
drive with a bootable Window XP that works correctly.
During bootup the computer still displays, "Please select
the operating system to start:" Since there now is only
one operating system how do I remove the unnecessary
selection during bootup?

Hi Jim,

We have an article that discusses how to edit the boot.ini file (which
controls what you see for operating systems at boot):

289022 HOW TO: Edit the Boot.ini File in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=289022

I will say that the nomenclature used in the file can be somewhat confusing
if you've not seen it before. Because of this, I would recommend making a
safe change to test what you've done first. For example, when you edit the
boot.ini file (which is really just a hidden text file in the root of your
C: drive) you will see "Windows XP Professional" (for example) for each
copy of XP. You can modify the text within the quotes for a reference the
next time you boot up to tell which line starts which copy. In other
words, you don't want to accidentally delete the line for the copy of the
OS you are using. Make a comment within the quotes of the instance you
think you should delete, save the change, restart the system, and verify
you chose the right one.
