Multiple Public/Private Networks and Discovery Problem

I'm trying to set up a network for use between my new Vista enabled
laboratory computers located on a university campus. We use the university
provided LAN for high speed connection to the internet and would like to have
a WAN for our own personal file sharing needs (no internet connection)
through our router.

Is it possible to have a public network (the LAN) and a private network (the
WAN) and have Discovery turned on for only the single private network?? If I
turn on discovery, it makes the public connection private, and then I'm able
to see everyone in the building. I'm concerned they may be able to see us as
well and access our files. Any help would be greatly appreciate. TIA. :o)
 
I am not sure I understand the issue, but I think you need a multihomed computer. That means you need two NICs.

I'm in a similar situation. I have two NICs on my Vista machine. One connects
to the Internet router and the other to our home LAN. It's two different
networks.
The problem is I want to turn on File/Printer sharing and network discovery
for just one of the links.
In the Network and Sharing center when you enable this, it enables it for
all the network connections which I don't want. Is it possible to do this in
Windows Vista?
I couldn't find any solution in the firewall settings either. Any help much
appriciated.

Has anyone figured this out? I'm in a similar situation. I work at home and
we have 6 computers in our home workgroup all plugged in to a hub that has a
connection to a dsl router. The one I work on has a VPN tunnel to our
corporate headquarters. On our new Vista Home Premium laptop if I turn
network discovery on I see all computers in our home workgroup and all
computers in the corporate domain.

I've tried opening Windows Explorer, double clicking on network, opening the
drop down box for workgroup and selecting the name of our home workgroup. It
stills looks at every one of the 100+ computers on the corporate domain and
shows then on left navigation tree but not in the list in the right window
pane. The next time I open Windows Explorer the box for our local workgroup
is once again unchecked. This is making me crazy.

Any one have suggestions?
