Working on a 2003 version, I have many photos that I want to turn into
individual slides. Is there an easier way than creating each slide
separately?
 
There sure is. It's called the Photo Album. Go to Insert/Picture/New Photo
Album and will have a tool to do exactly what you want with some options.
