Multiple network profiles

J

John Smith

Lately I've been finding myself in situations where I have been traveling
with my laptop and have to connect to multiple networks during the same day,
ie.

a) In the morning at my office with a wired connection and static IP,
b) at one client's office using a wired connection on their network and DHCP
assigned address
c) another client office with wireless and static IP,
d) at a hotel using wireless with the hotel's settings

and
having to change smtp server names at each place because of various no smtp
relay rules.

Is there a way to create a stored profile for each location that
automatically configures the tcp/ip parameters when I boot my laptop when I
arrive at each location?

Is there any way to also automatically change the smtp server by location?

Thanks.

Use DHCP. That's easy enough to implement - it's your network, right?

I would recommend they use DHCP as well. I mean, it's 2005, for pete's sake.
Who wants to deal with an excel spreadsheet to track IPs? :)

If none of the above is possible, see the product Phillip recommended.

d) at a hotel using wireless with the hotel's settings

....which are likely going to be DHCP.

For this: if you don't have an ISP who will allow you to use authenticated
relay (so you can use the same one everywhere) I would see about the
inexpensive relay service offered at www.dyndns.org. Or you can see

I have one of those. I've had it so long I am emotionaly attached to it,
I'd probably feel like the Cat got ran over if I lost it :). But now
about half of it says "(DHCP)" where the IP# used to be listed. The MAC
addresses are also listed. It has other info beyond the IP so it is still
needed in my case.

Is it very tattered at the edges?
Perhaps you should have it laminated so it will last longer. :p

It has a stick through each end and you unroll it to read it. You might
call it the Dead MDF Scrolls. :)
