Multiple network cards setup

I have a system consisting to 5 machines on a P2P network via a 5 way 100Mb
switch.

All are Win 2kPro

One is setup for ICS so has 192.168.0.1

The others are all set to obtain Ip address automatically.

I have just bought a iPAQ 5450 and want to use the WLAN to access the
internet thru it, thru the home network.

I want to put a PCMCIA WLAN card in to one of the laptops that is on the
network.

CA this be done? and what IP settings on the WLAN card to allow pass thru to
the network? Would the iPAQ be setup to obtain an IP address auto? or
manual on a seperate subnet mask?

I am also trying to remote control the PC using Netremote/Girder/Media
Centre, bu that is another story...

Cheers

I wrestled with a similar setup recently to get a broadband connection to my
place. What you are asking for is possible but will require you to play
around with settings or change your setup somewhat.

The first thing is that you will have to put in the Wireless card in the PC
or laptop that is actually sharing the internet connection, in other words
the PC where ICS is installed. This is so ICS can properly route the data
from the different subnets.

Once you put in the wlan card in this pc, it will appear as another network
connection. Set the IP for this wireless connection to 192.168.1.1 with a
mask of 255.255.255.0. Leave gateway and dns as blank.

I assume there is a way to set the IP configuration on the iPAQ. If so, set
its wireless IP to 192.168.1.2, mask 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.1.1. For
the DNS entry, find out what DNS server the ICS machine is getting from your
ISP and then type this in manually in the iPAQ.

Using the wireless configuration software on both the pc and the iPAQ set
the wireless mode to ad-hoc. Verify that there is connectivity from the pc
to the handheld by pinging 192.168.1.2. The pc should get a reply back from
the handheld. Once this is working, you should be able to browse the net
from the iPAQ.

There are other ways to do this, but this allows every program to access the
internet connection without changing any proxy settings.

Let us know how it works out. Just remember, I spent 2 hours to get this
setup running so keep at it!

Thanks for that advice, I will give it a go. Unfortunately cant fit the
wireless card to the ICS machine, as ICS is desktop and card is PCMCIA.
Could buy adapter or wirelsess card for ICS machine, but then I would be
spending money that would be better spent on WLAN router and broadband
connection which would solve the issue, BUT ....No Money at present.

I will set up as you described, by putting old spare 133 laptop in place of
the ICS machine for a few days but due to walls and distances involved, I
do not think I will get wireless connectivity to where the iPAQ will be
'based'. Unfortunately it will have to go back the way it started as the
other people sharing the house want the Internet PC left as is.

Have been playing with various setup options including how you suggested
since 6 am this morning, it is now 4 in the afternoon, sometimes it works,
then sometimes it does not, just about ready to put an axe through the
whole ***** (add as many erxpetives as you can think of here) lot.

Am so completely pissed off with the whole thing, the slower of the laptops
(Toshiba 133Mh) is now trashed. Have taken it outside and put an axe
through the thing to prevent me from ever attempting to use the thing again.
It made me feel SOO much better.

My god, that's better than I expected. You actually had some fun on a Sunday
by destroying some old piece of crap!!! :)

Seriously, though. You said it works sometime and then it doesn't. So what's
happening? Is it because of the walls weakening the signals or something?
Can you get internet access on the iPAQ at all? What brand of Wireless PC
card to you have?

Looking back it was fun, have had to go to work, so had to get away.!!

Had all the PC's in same room for the work today. Brought the laptop and
PCMCIA card in to work (with the iPAQ). All connecting fine now. part of
the problem was the PCMCIA card over heating!! it muct have been part of the
problem it had been on the go for a good 8-10 hours !! it certainly was
smelling and feeling rather warm.

I was connected thru the iPAQ to the internet last night just using laptop,
with pcmcia wireless card, and dialup account with ICS. iPAQ connected no
problem. this evening can't get it to work!! Something in the iPAQ
connection settings. I have been thru the so called (typical MS) help
files, but under connection to the internet it only deals with connecting by
modem.

Strange things are happening though. At work there is a wireless ADSL modem
router, but not connected to adsl. It is just set as a wireless connection
to the 2 PC P2P network in the office. Do not know if it is set to
infrastructure or ad hoc.
BUT the laptop will only show signal and connect when in infrastructure mode
and it gets IP address assigned from it. iPAQ will not get signal from it
in infrastructure mode, only in ad-hoc, but it is not finding DHCP and being
assigned an IP address.
I set the thing up as a temp measure a few months back when a new manager
came in to the place and he wanted wireless access for his laptop. I am
only part time here and they have at last got a some people in from outside
to sort the system out, new machines etc.so they may have changed how it is
setup. Admin pwd to router has changed so possibly other settings. But
that still does not expalin why one machine connects and shows signal, and
another with same setting does bugger all, yet the two can happily talk to
each other when WLAN router is off. ?

I can ping the iPAQ from the laptop. Cant try ping from the iPAQ though
because I have not yet found a way to get a command prompt. The WLAN
monitor on laptop is showing absolutely 0% signal and quality although only
12 inches away from the iPAQ BUT IpaQ monitor show full strength but the
ping is good always <10ms. I can also prove a good connection between
laptop and iPAQ because the netremote program can contol the media centre
client correctly

Wireless card is Belkin 808.11b model F5d6020 ver 2.

I have tried so many different settings, and configs I really do not have
any idea what is happening at the moment. The more I try , and draw a
blank, the more likely the axe is to come out again!!

Ayway have done my 3 hours behind the desk this evening, and have seen no
one except this bloody keyboard and the iPAQ, thinkI'll drop them all in the
trash on the way home and forget I ever saw a PC. Spending money on new kit
would be the answer, but since I earned £400 last month and may be £150 this
month not buying anything more this year.

Cheers for you input

Too much information at 12 in the night...Will read through this and update
in the morning :)

I understand, I was rambling on a bit.

Will have to find a job and buy a wireless router.

I know what, these wireless thingies run on frequencies. See if changing
them around makes a difference... (Just rambling) :)

Dont believe Wireless signal strength. I live on the 2nd floor and while XP
says that there is no signal at all, I can still browse the internet and
download stuff at a reasonable speed.

I have got a job and believe me, it still doesnt pay!

I have full Airline Tspt pilot licence, but everything is so down after 9/11
can't find work. Some money is better than none.

I have left the problem alone now, will try again once I have everything
running on the same network subnet.

Cheers for your help

Neil
