I am running Office 2000 Developer on Windows 2000 and I
have the following:

Item Version Location
msjet40.dll 4.0.8015.0 C:\WINNT\System32
msjet40.dll 4.0.6218.0 C:\WINNT\$NtServicePackUninstall$
msjet40.dll 4.0.7328.0 C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\I386
msjet40.dll 4.0.7328.0 C:\WINNT\$NtUninstallKB29558$
msjet40.dll 4.0.2927.17 C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\ODETools\V9\RunTime
\min\system
msjet40.dll 4.0.2927.17 C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\ODETools\V9\RunTime
\full\system

How many should I have?
How do I know which one I am running?
Which ones should I eliminate?
Can I just trash them?
If so, should I do anything with the other files in the
same folders?

The one that is probably being used by most programs is the one in the
System32 directory. The ones in *Uninstall* directories are backups from
patch installs. If you uninstall the patch, the version in this directory
would be restored. The one in the ServicePackFiles\I386 is the version that
was distributed with that particular Windows Service Pack and would have
been installed when that service pack was installed, unless a newer one was
already on your system.

That leaves the one in the ODETools directories. I haven't used the Access
Runtime. Are these directories part of a Runtime install or part of the
developer's packaging kit to distribute a runtime? Hopefully, someone with
more experience using the runtime can answer about this one.
