I have a Fujitsu laptop running XP Pro with a software LAN adaptor
I have a cable internet connection at home which has a fixed TCPIP address &
DNS setting.
I have a LAN connection in my office with a different fixed TCPIP address &
DNS setting.
Sometimes I work in other offices which have other addresses and settings.
As far as I can see I can only hold one fixed address setting on my Local
Area Connection TCP/IP properties.
This mean each time I switch locations (normally twice a day, sometimes
more) I have to re-enter the TCP/IP and DNS connections. Boring, and easy to
get wrong with my lousy typing.
Is there a way of avoiding this and holding them as profiles, where I could
select which ever profile I need at one time?
So far the best I have managed it to hold one of the settings as an
"Alternative Configuration", then: (1) either use it with the main setting
at "Obtain an IP address automatically" -or- (2) type in the other settings
in the main IP address settings panel.
This saves me remembering one IP setting, but not the others.
Surely this is quite a common need with so many people moving around between
offices and companies and their LANs?
I have multiple dial-up ISP connections for different countries and this
works fine, but I cannot find a similar easy solution for LANs.
Also if someone feels like explaining what the "1394 connection" really
means, and how it differes from the LAN settings, I would be grateful! Both
allow TCI/IP settings to be entered but I cannot see why.
XP "help"... well, it does not.
And my "MS XP Adminstrators Pocket Consultant" does not seem to mention it.
