Right-click on an empty area of the Desktop and then left-click on
Properties. This opens the Display applet. You can adjust how wallpaper
is displayed there (tiled, centered, stretched).

I tried that, tile, center and stretch. None of those options give the
original effect. Would this problem occur if the picture had been edited in
some way?

I don't understand what you are trying to do. If you apply a different
picture, are you not able to change how it is displayed? Check to make
sure nothing is locked by going to the Display applet in Control Panel
and looking on the Desktop tab. Click on Customize Desktop, and then
click on the Web tab. You will see that there are checkmarks next to
"My Current Home Page" and probably "Lock Desktop Items". If they are
checked, uncheck them, Apply/OK out.

Yes, if you edited the picture, that could change its view. Look at the
picture with MSPaint or another graphics program. It it has a border
around it, the border will show in the display. Even if you increased
your display settings, pixels across and down, I would think the bmp
should still stretch to fill the screen.
