Can I make XP SP2 recognise an additional external drive? Even when I
uninstall the two optical drives on my desktop the system will not recognise
a USB external drive. Windows Explorer assigns it a drive letter but no other
part of the system will communicate with the new drive.

I'm not sure what your problem is, but it has nothing to do with the number
of drives you have. What does "no other part of the system will communicate
with the new drive" mean? What happens when you try? If you get an error
message, please quote it verbatim.

Has the drive been formatted?

And please don't post the same question multiple times. You probably can't
find your original message, and think that it hasn't been posted, but that's
because you are using the awful web interface to participate in this
newsgroup--it's the slowest, clunkiest, most error-prone method there is. Do
yourself a favor and switch to a newsreader, such as Outlook Express, which
comes with Windows. See

Yes the drive has been formatted and everything works perfectly on my laptop.
On the desktop, although Windows Explorer shows the presence of the drive as
F:\Local Disc it will not show me the files stored on the drive. When I
attempt to copy a file to the external by either drag and drop in explorer or
by the Send To option in the RMB drop down I get a pop up that says "Cannot
create or replace [filename]; cannot find the specified file. Make sure you
specify the correct path and file name"
