When I open excel 2000, and unending number of workbooks
keep opening up. at least 1500 will continiously open,
they won't stop and I can't figure out how to make them
stop. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Greg,

I vaguely remember this being a bug caused by a malfunctioning add-in
that gets installed in your XLStart directory. Find your XLStart directories
and remove any files that are in them. One will be located in the main
Office installation location, which is:

C:\Program File\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart

if you did a default installation. If you're running Windows 2000 or higher
there will also be another one under your profile at:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

where <username> is the username you're logged in with. Try opening Excel
again once you've done this and see if it fixes the problem.

Some random advice--first, can you hit CTL-Break when it
is opening up all that stuff? Second, if you have your
orig install CD (and the CD case with the CD # on it)
perhaps you can de-install and re-install Excel.

I am wondering if you have used macros in a spreadsheet
that call other spreadsheets, or links between
spreadsheets...or if you installed Excel in a folder
other than the standard Programs/Office whatever folder.
In either of these three instances, perhaps a solutoin is
to go into Windows Explorer or whatever file manager pgm
you use, and move your Excel (working not program) files
to another, new folder, at least temporarily.

Hope this helps!

Pete

I suspect you have an entry in Tools>options...>general, alternate start-up
file location. This should usually be blank. XL will open all files
contained in the folder specified here

Open excel in safe mode from Start>Run... (excel.exe /safe). Change the
setting and all should be OK
