Problem Description: I just upgraded to Windows XP home
edition from Windows ME. I have an IBM Netvista desktop.
Now I have problems that I never had with ME.
1) Very poor performace after the upgrade.
2) MS IE 6.o SP1, has a constant error "Loading Toolbar
resources, please wait..." How do I remove this message.
I tried updating but I get an error that says that I have
the most current version. Never had this error before the
upgrade.
3) When I right-click on the desktop to change
screensaver or background, I get the following error "Run
a DLL as an App has encountered a problem and needs to
close". How do I fix this? I keep sending error report
but nohing comes of it. Never had this error before the
upgrade
4) When I shut down I get the following error "End
Program - Uinfo4.exe" No response. Never had this error
before the upgrade

Sounds like you've got some nasty parasite/virus/spyware going on (I'm not
going to bother differencing between them at this point). Loading tool bar
resources - most likely a rouge toolbar installed itself, but can't
initialize (Cashbar, for example). Uinfo4.exe - I seem to remember that
being some type of parasite/virus/spyware. RunDll errors - historically and
often times caused by parasite/virus/spyware. Slow system - could be a combo
of the above problems.

Download and run Ad Aware. Scan you system and remove what it finds. Also,
Spybot is a great little app that had a nifty Immunize feature - it
effectively protects your machine from malicious code on web pages (which is
most likely how you were infected in the first place). Once you get this
problem fixed, you don't want to have to do it all over again!

My guess would also be that your IE default search pages (the ones found in
the Registry) have been compromised as well. To test - open IE (if you can).
In the address bar, type in random characters - like sdfsdkfjhsdkfk, and
press enter. Assuming you don't have 'Do not search from the Address bar'
selected in your IE advanced preferences, you won't get directed to a valid
Microsoft search site, but some other random, non-intended search site. If
this is the case, you know you're in trouble!

IE parasites can be a real pain to get rid of, and some techs I know won't
even mess with them - that's more than sufficient grounds for a format and
reinstall of the OS. I've personally been able to effectively remove them
completely, but I won't lie, it takes some work: researching, patience,
registry editing, rebooting, testing, etc. - and you never truly know if you
found everything...

Of course, this could all be wrong, and your problems might be related to
the "flaky-ness" of ME carrying over to XP (perhaps you did an 'in-place'
upgrade, and not a fresh install with format).

Post back and let us know if this was any help.

Good luck!
