I fell victim to the situation where Windows Update said there were critical
downloads available. So I did and the installation did NOT go properly as
the message about not being properly XP certificated popped up saying the
installation would cease....followed by the screen saying installation was
successful.
So, I tried again every day for a few days with the same results. (by the
way, none of the fixes for a similar situation referenced on Kelli's site
mentioned the specific numbers I was having issues with).
Finally, a link provided by some good soul here to Microsoft's screen led to
a 6 pager of tips to fix such a situation. The 'cure' in my case was that I
had the Cryptography service disabled. Setting it to 'automatic' caused the
updates to proceed properly and Windows update no longer says these same
files should be downloaded.
However, I'm left with the situation where I have multiple entries in my
'View Install History' for these downloads, all showing as 'successful'
when, in fact, only yesterday's were. Five duplicates for one of them; three
times for the other.
So (sorry for being verbose), is there any way, short of playing with the
registry (I'd rather swim with alligators--hungry ones!) to delete duplicate
entries in my Install History? I have searched around but haven't found a
solution. I know this isn't a 911 issue but any help would be more than
welcome.
My O/S is XP Home....if that is a factor.
Thanks.
