I have a partitioned hdd,I took my hdd to a friends house
and when I brought it home it wouldt boot,so on one of
the free partitions I wrote another copy of xp.Come to
find out the original copy of xp was fine and works great,
however when my cpu boots there is a screen that I choose
which copy to use.The new copy is the first option and
the orig. is the second option.The choice screen goes by
so fast that I have to hit the f8 key until it gives me
options as to how and what copy to use,How do get rid of
the new false copy?In my computer I deleted all the files
but the properties of the partition says 784mb used when
no files are showing......Tried to format but error
message says another prog is using partition
Thanks for any help

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab and then click on "Check All Boot Paths"
to delete incorrect boot paths.

If the above does not work for you, then:

Right-click MY COMPUTER and select:

Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Edit

CAREFULLY edit your boot.ini file to remove the SECOND entry.
Your boot.ini file should then look similar to this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

Visit http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/xpfaq.html and click on
link #18 (I have two installations of XP on the same partition) and
follow the instructions.
