Multihomed Routing to 192.168.1.0

I can't ping through my RRAS router to a private address. I have a
network that uses a combination of public and private ip addresses.
On a multihomed W2k server, I have set up RRAS with a public IP and a
private IP. On another computer that is exclusively a public IP, I
have set the gateway to the W2k server, not the ISP's default gateway.

Example:

Multihomed W2k Server - Public - 55.55.55.51 - Gateway is ISP's
gateway
- Private - 192.168.1.1 - No gateway

Workstation 1 - Public - 55.55.55.52 - Gateway is 55.55.55.51
Workstation 2 - Private - 192.168.1.2

On Workstation 1 that is exclusively a public IP, I have set the
gateway to the W2k server, not the ISP's default gateway. Since I
figure the packets to 192.168.1.0 from this public computer is going
to a server with RRAS that knows where the 192.168.1.0 network is, I
would assume I could access it, but I can't. I would understand why I
can't reach the private network if I had set Workstation 1's gateway
to the ISP's gateway, but I don't understand why a multihomed router
can't route packets to private addresses.

I can ping the server's private ip address of 192.168.1.1 with
Workstation 1, but the packets don't seem to go any further than that
even though I added a static route for the Server with 192.168.1.0
255.255.255.0 and 192.168.1.1 for interface and gateway.

Any ideas?

Regards.

Have you enabled NAT on the RRAS server? You cannot ping through NAT
from the public to the private side.

If NAT is off (and LAN routing is enabled), it should route as long as
the packets actually get to the router. So if both the clients have their DG
set to be the router's interface in their network, it should work. eg

55.55.55.52 dg 55.55.55.51 |
|
55.55.55.51 dg Internet router
RRAS
192.168.1.1 dg blank
|
192.168.1.2 dg 192.168.1.1

You are correct. I didn't set the private workstation to the correct
gateway. I assumed that as long as the 55.55.55.51 router had a
direct interface to 192.168.1.2 that all packets would be routable.
After setting the gateway of 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.1, I can connect
the public address to the private address. Thanks for your input.
