Can I multiboot Vista with XP Pro ? If so, is there anything different from
other multibooting issues?

Yes you can, it does use a new bootloader so it is pretty different to
Windows XP but I've not heard of any major issues.

Of course you can also change the boot order in the BIOS - that way both
drives will be independent (with their own normal loader) and even if Vista
hosed it's own drive with the boot loader you could just go back to the BIOS
and switch back to the XP drive.

Since the boot loader in Vista is different than XP does this mean that I
can't dual boot from different partitions on the same physical drive?

Yeh you should be able to. However I really cannot remember whether you are
meant to install Vista after or before on a dual boot. I can never remember
whether the BCDEDIT (new boot loader) ruins your partition setup or
compliments it...

I'm pretty sure if you install Vista first then another operating system on
another partition afterwards - that'll work :o)

Yes you can, thats how I am dual booting right now (actually, multibooting).
If you have multiple versions of older versions of Windows installed, they
will be stored under the "Legacy (pre-Longhorn) Microsoft Windows operating
System" entry.

I notice that if you install Windows XP Professional x64 after Vista, it
will put a boot entry on the Windows Boot Manager installed Vista or
Longhorn Server.

No, it doesn't mean that, at all. I'm currently dual-booting WinXPx64
and Vista64, with each installed on different partitions of the same
physical hard drive.

No no, it makes no difference if it's a physical drive or not... but if
something goes wrong with Vista boot loader, either a single drive or two
separate ones it means getting the XP disc out and fixing the boot loader
etc... which is annoying. 8-)

Alternatively if you've got two drives, just switch the drive you'll install
Vista on to primary in the BIOS and it won't even touch the Windows XP drive
so you're near 100% insulated from disaster if something does go wrong.

A lot of people are however running it in the configuration you're
describing and have not had any issues, in fact probably most people are
using it like that. I must be stuck in my ways or something. 8-)

Do I have to install Vista first and then XP? I already have XP installed
and was wondering if I could just load Vista to a new partition.

Windows XP will need to be there first. If the partition is there and all
set, just go ahead and install.

You won't be easily able to share data files between the two partitions
with User Account Protection on.

.... Or use a third partition for data storage.

but what if i am dual booting them from the same hard drive but on different
partitions?

I shouldn't have to move files from root level folders on either drive
for Vista to use them. XP has no problen, only Vista.

BCDEdit allows you customize your boot up options, but its so technical.

I'd call it tedious or clunky.
The
Windows Team should have spent every bit of their resources to ensure that
there is graphical boot manager in Vista.

I'd just like a nice GUI'd boot manager editor.

Vista's behaviour is different from XP's and 2000's. For example, if you
change the active partitions, it won't change necessarily the C: desingation
to the one which is active .. and so on .. so it should be interesting.

i'm really good with computers, since i am beta testing vista, by the time
it comes out, i'll know almost everything about it. i'll probably make fixes
for it as well. and send them into microsoft. i'll just make the
developement of it go a tad bit faster. of course then, the more beta
testers that there is for vista that acually submit the issues they have,
the better vista will be when it comes out.
