MultiBoot and BCDEDIT

In previous versions of windows multiboot configs were stored in boot.ini.
This was a simlple text file that could easily be edited and updated using
Notepad.

Vista seems to have taken a different approach and instead created BCDEDIT.
The problem I see is that BCDEDIT is a command shell utility. Being
DOS-like, cut and paste options are gone. It seems that doing anything is
now many times more difficult.

Vista no longer works on this system, and reinstalls fail with undocumented
copy errors. However I'm still left with yet another boot menu that has no
purpose in life now.

Is there any easy way to make this new Vists boot menu go away altogether?

Ed

Already found that one earlier.

I found a way to get rid of the old entries. However Vista now refuses to
install with a "An error occurred while copying files" error and it's all
over.

This happens for installs on all drives, from the DVD, from the ISO
(mounted) ,etc. There are no remaining files on the drives from previous
failed installs.

Seems to be a classic catch-22 situation.

You are right on that, thats why it is still in Beta. :)

Applied but still waiting to be accepted for the Vista Beta Testing group.
Can't wait to be able to play and help make it even better.

By prime time, I mean it's not even ready for Beta. As the back woods folks
say, "This dog don't hunt...".

The error message "There was an Error while copying Files," is most often
caused by trying to Install Windows Vista on a Un-Formatted RAW Hard Disk
Drive. You must first Format your Hard Disk Drive with something other than
Windows Vista's Disk Formatting Software (which does not work correctly just
yet, and may cause your Hard Disk Drive to stop working correctly), I would
recommend using your Hard Disk Drive Manufacturer's Disk Formatting Software
instead.

I would disagree on this. So far, what I have read in newsgroups and web
sites and seen from screen shots, it is improving and at this time, still
should be beta. If it wasn't beta, there is no way that Microsoft could
have improved it so much in the recent builds because of the limited amount
of users they have.

That is not the issue. The drive is already NTFS and has had other versions
of windows installed.

It turns out the prlblem was related to a previous install of Vista. That
install died and had to be manually removed. A few hidden directories were
still there and apparently Vista was not smart enough to eiither deal with
them, or to imform me as to what files were causing a problem.

It took a third party tool to remove the hidden directores as even Explorer
security options were not successful. At that point, some hours later,
Vista had reinstalled.

Andre:

All I want to do is change my default boot OS to be " Legacy" ( not
Vista). I thought quickly edit a file and I now need a GUID ?? So I
need to boot Vista ( I'm booted on XP right now). Then have the GUID for
XP. Then run bcdedit ... ??? I went to the online link but I still
don't get it : What exactly do I need to do to change the order of the
boot program so that by default it's Not Vista, but "the legacy line of
text" ? which would then call to my XP boot loader.

Jeesh ... Why so complicated ? I guess it's so they can multiboot OS'es
, but who came up with stuff like:

System Properties, Advanced tab, and Startup button.
to reach Systrem Properties eszsily, use "windows key" + "Pause/Break" keys

(e-mail address removed)
