I have many A records with different names with the same IP address. These
records are dynamically created with dhcp. The dns and dhcp server are on
the same box, Windows 2003 SP1. How can I get the correct names to match
the correct ip address? All these records are created from dhcp.

thanks
John

yea I setup scavenging a few days ago.

I just found on the zone properties, under aging, at the bottom
This zone can be scavenged after 6-17-05
so I guess I need to wait until then to see the duplicates go away?

Thanks
John

Yes, there's a method based on the scavenge time. Patience...

Look in this article:
Window 2000 DNS [See scavenging section]:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/plan/w2kdns2.mspx

Search for the scavenging section. There's a table explaining the settings
and a chart illustrating the timeline on how and when a record gets
scavenged.

I see this..

If scavenging is disabled on a standard zone and you enable scavenging, the
server does not scavenge records that existed before you enabled scavenging.
The server does not scavenge those records even if you convert the zone to
an Active Directory-integrated zone first. To enable scavenging of such
records, use Dnscmd.exe.

my zone is already AD integrated, and I just turned on scavenging about a
week ago. Will it scavenge my records that were created before I enabled
scavenging or not?

thanks

John

Based on what you quoted, no, not for DHCP registered records created prior
to enabling scavenging. Any static records will not get affected.
