Is there a function in excel that lets 2 or more people work at the same time
on a file (not in the shared documents) and reflect the changes?
 
I'm not clear on your question, because in order for more than one user to
work in the file at the same time, it MUST be Shared. The file does not need
to be stored in the Shared Documents folder (if that's what you're referring
to) as long as it is stored in a folder each user has access to.

Using Excel's Tools>Share Workbook feature when one user saves changes any
changes saved by another user are indicated and vice-versa.

Am I on the right track? |:>)
 
First of all, thank you for your help. Now, my 2nd question is, is there a
way to restrict sharing of files to, let's say, just 3 people in the office?
So that those people can view/edit the file and the others won't have access
to it. Did that make sense? :D

The workbook share makes it possible for two or more users to have the
workbook open at the same time, and be able save their changes. The
operative part is "at the same time."

To allow opening by only certain users, use Password to open, or Password to
modify. This is in File - Save as. Click Tools - General Options. This
may be different on versions of Excel older than 2002, but it's still in the
Save as box. The password has nothing to do with the sharing.

second issue, or you might want to work through your network admin to set up

Another question for you. I'm just wondering how I can have access to someone
else's folder/files if it's not in the shared folder, can you walk me through
this? Is this feature available to all versions of Excel, if not, which
version specifically are you talking about? And does this require more than 1
license? thank you.
 
This is an interesting subject. I have a sheet that is shared by about 6
people in the office.
I want to give one person the right to change the content any cell and the
others only specific cells. I also want to keep track of who changed a cell
and when. At the end of the day I want see who changed what (including the
privelidged user). I'm getting confused with the protection and sharing
features. Is it so that the priv. user should bump off the others when she
changes cells? Will the tracking of the changes by other users stay logged
somewhere when the file is saved? How should I (or should I) set the "Track
changes" feature? (we have a p2p network so no domians but workgroups)
 
is it possible to set modify privilege for different user?
for example, use A can only modify the sheet1, other sheets ready only, user
B can only be allowed to modify/edit sheet2, rest sheets read only.
