boot to the xp cd, press F5 when setup starts when you are
prompted to press F6 to install a scsi/raid driver. A HAL
listing will come up...choose the one you want...then
perform a repair install.

this is the ONLY way.

You can also do an inplace upgrade although you will lose any hot fixes or
service packs that were installed. E verything else should be ok.

1. Place Windows XP install disk in CD tray
2. Click Start -> Run
3. Assuming the CD is drive D: type the following into the Run dialog:
d:\i386\winnt32 /unattend
4. This will perform an install using all the data from the previous
installation. All your hardware will PnP and be correctly added giving you
your multiproc HAL.

Hello, I was able to quickly resolve this by just asking
microsoft directly and am posting the following for
anyone else that may be searching the group as I did
questions on this.

You want to replace the HAL for dual processors in
Windows XP.

1. Click Start, click Control Panel, double click System,
click the Hardware tab, and click Device Manager.

2. Double click the sub-entry under the Computer branch.

3. On the Driver tab, click Update Driver.

4. Select "Install from a list or specific location", and
click Next.

5. Select "Don't search. I will choose the drive to
install", and click Next.

6. In the Models box, check if there is an option related
to multiple Processors.

7. If there is, click it; follow the wizard to accomplish
the process.

8. After that, restart the computer and test the problem.

Then, you should be able to use dual processors for
Windows XP

If there isn't an option related to multiple processors
in the Device Manager when you update the driver, please
follow the steps below to resolve the problem. These
steps will upgrade HAL in the system.

1. Restart the computer and enter BIOS. Modify the
settings and let the system first boot from the CD-ROM.
You can get the detailed steps to enter into BIOS from
the manual of the motherboard.

2. Insert the Windows XP install CD and restart the
computer.

3. You receive the following informational message across
the bottom of the screen:

Hit F6 if you need to load a third party SCSI or Raid
driver.

When this message appears, press F5. You can now make HAL
choices by viewing the different options.

4. After you press F5, you will see the following list of
computer types (listed in bold). A brief description of
each HAL is included below as a reference.

- ACPI Multiprocessor PC: Use for a multiple-processor
ACPI computer

- ACPI Uniprocessor PC: Use for an ACPI multiple-
processor board but with a single processor installed

5. Select the first one and press Enter.

6. On the option screen, press Enter to select the "To
set up Windows XP now, Press Enter".

7. Press F8 to accept the License Agreement.

XP installation, press R.
