I have a machine that came with Windows 98 2nd Ed
installed. Iupgraded to Windows XP. A couple of weeks ago
I uninstalled Windows XP. Now when I try to reinstall XP,
I get an error message that says Can not install XP as
there is more that one version of windows on the machice.

How do I find out what is on machine and configure it so I
can reinstall Windows XP?

Hi, Howard.

Are you trying to create a dual-boot system again? Or are you ready to
retire Win98 and install WinXP only?

If you have your data backed up and want to do a clean install of WinXP
only, then just forget everything that has been done up to this point. Set
your computer to boot from the CD drive, put the WinXP CD-ROM in there and
reboot. One of the first options you will see will be to repartition your
HD. Tell it Yes, and be ready to tell it how big the first partition should
be; otherwise, it will partition the whole drive as a single volume - which
may be what you want, anyhow. After partitioning, Setup will format the
drive; unless you plan to install Win9x/ME on this machine, format it all
NTFS.

When WinXP is fully installed (including a visit to Windows Update for SP1
and other fixes), install your applications from the original CDs or other
media, then restore your data from backup.
