Can any one recommend a reasonable multi function unit around the £100 -
£150 mark?
Looking at the HP PSC 2355, seems to be ok. The only thing was ink and
relative costs of different brands. Also do these sorts of printers
generally have to leave a boarder on prints?

The above link has information on multi function printers. Just remember
that in a MFP you get one device that does three or four things reasonably
well, but usually only one thing very well. Print quality may be poor, but
you get a great fax machine. Fax capability may be great, but the scanner
sucks. You might get a wonderful scanner, but a lousy printer. You get the
idea. I would not suggest a MFP for someone who is printing high resolution
photos. I personally have three devices for printing, scanning and fax use.
My Epson Stylus Photo R200 prints my digital images, a Samsung ML - 1430
Laser Printer handles my document printing tasks and my Epson Perfection
1650 flatbed scanner addresses my needs for scanning, copying and faxing
documents as well as slides and negatives.
