Multi File Properties in Search Results

Hi,

After performing a search which returns lots of files in
multiple folders, I do a "Select All", then right click
and choose "Properties". Rather than correctly
displaying the number of files and total size, it gets it
completely wrong. I selected 1,885 files occupying about
250Mb, and chose Properties, which went away for a while
before announcing "3 files, all of one type(clearly
wrong), 481 bytes".

In widows 2000 I used to regularly use this feature to
find the number of files and size under a folder, but it,
like lots of other things, no longer works properly in XP.

It seems like a basic error - is this a known bug?

It's not a bug. You probably have search results from zip or cab files. They don't exist unless the containing folder is opened - search peeks.

You're right - there were 3 zip files in the results. I
deleted them and it now identifies the properties
correctly.

Why does search go into the zip files (but not .gz
or .jar)? I've got winzip installed, therefore I thought
this turned off windows handling of zip files.

At least there should be an option in search to not go
into zip files.

Is there a way to globally switch off windows handling of
zips? I hate it when windows introduces new features that
poorly implement something that was perfectly well
implemented by someone else previously, breaks that
implementation and breaks other things in the process...

Thanks for the reply,

Andy

Thanks,

Andy

Coz, Windows XP treats zip files as folders. To turn it off, "regsvr32 /u
zipfldr" and "regsvr32 /u cabview".

Wait a moment for more explanation on this from David Candy ;)
