I have read the following
document "http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?
scid=kb;en-us;232000&sd=tech"

It says that you can bind multiple IP's to the virtual
NWLBS nic however if you follow the instructions they
don't ring true for w2k. I cannot find the NLB virtual NIC
interface.Has anyone set this up before and
if so how was it achieved?

cheers

Hi Ian,
It appears that you are trying to add multiple virtual IP addresses for use
in Network Load Balancing for Windows 2000. It is kind of strange but here
is the idea. You setup the NLB options using the NLB GUI on the NIC you
want to be load balanced. There are 3 tabs for this, one sets the dedicated
adapter IP, one sets a virtual adapter IP and the third tab sets the
balancing rules for the virtual IP. When this is all setup you must then
edit the list of bound IP address via the TCP/IP advanced properties. The
dedicated or unique IP should be listed first, then the specified Virtual
IP address that was used in the NLB GUI setup previously. Now here is where
it gets interesting, any other IP address that is bound to the NIC is
automatically considered virtual if it is not the listed dedicated IP that
was specified in the NLB GUI. Thus if you want multiple Virtual IP address
for NLB bound to a single network card, you setup the NLB GUI section then
just bind the desired IP address to the same card.

One caveat should be kept in mind though; on a Windows 2000 NLB system the
rules specified in the NLB GUI for how load should be balanced is global
for all virtual IP addresses. It is not possible to set one set of rules
for one virtual IP and another set of rules for any other virtual IP. This
is a new feature that is available in Windows Server 2003 along with
several other new management features and enhancements.

#######################Extract from Network Load Balancing Cluster Help
##########################

When using Telnet or attempting to browse a computer outside the cluster
from a cluster host, there is no response. However, using ping to access the
outside computer works.

Cause: The TCP/IP configuration is incorrect. If you are using a single
network adapter, the dedicated IP address must be entered before the cluster
IP addresses in the TCP/IP configuration within the Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP) properties dialog box. Otherwise, the cluster IP address can be
selected as the source address, and the outside computer will respond to the
cluster IP address instead of to the dedicated IP address. In this case,
responses are directed only to the default host. (Note that you will not
observe this problem on the default host.)

Solution: Check the TCP/IP configuration to make sure that the dedicated IP
address is first in the list. You can also use multiple network adapters to
avoid this problem.

If you use a single network adapter and follow this instruccions you can
access the outside computer but you're not able to access the \\clustername
from WIN98 and NT.

If you add a second network adapter you can access the \\clustername from
98/NT, but only the default host have access to the outsider (in this case a
printer). Is there any special configuration for the second network adapter
to solve this problem.

Also in this configuration, the host with the priority 2 can get jobs from
clients but only the "DEFAULT HOST" have access to the printer. The HOST 2
must set as default to get access (when you stop the wlbs or if the default
host is down).

Another problem we've found is that you can access the cluster by name in
WIN98 if the "DEFAULT HOST" is online, if you stop it, the HOST 2 will set
as default, but clients with WIN98 will be able to access the cluster only
by the VIP.

Jorge
