MTP driver file missing

System:
XP Home SP2, WMP11 installed
Device: Creative Zen Vision M 30GB

Problem:
I have had the Zen Vision M working for quite some time with my system. Last
weekend, I had a problem with another device, and the only way to fix it was
to do a System State Restore. It fixed the other device (flatbed scanner),
but broke connectivity to the Zen.
When I plug the Zen in, I get a message near the system tray saying "Found
new Hardware", followed by a message saying "Creative Zen Vision:M", followed
by "MTP device". Then I get an error message saying there is a problem. When
I open Device Manager, The Zen is listed under portable devices, with a
yellow error symbol. The properties box says "Reinstall the drivers for this
device. (Code 18)To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall
Driver."
When I click Reinstall Driver, it winds up saying, "An error occurred during
the installation of the device. The system cannot find the file specified."
I have reinstalled WMP11, removed and reinstalled the creative software, and
made sure the plug-and-play service is running. When the Zen is set to act as
a removable device, it does mount and transfer files, so it seems the
hardware is working, Problem seems to be finding the MTP driver.
If this is the problem, can this be found somewhere?

I know this is an old thread, but the problem clearly still exists. None of the suggested solutions worked.

Eventually I went to the maker of my motherboard (Asus), downloaded and installed the latest drivers and a registry patch for S3 devices. It now works. I should have done one at a time, but I suspect the patch did it.

For my board (Asus A7V400-MX) that meant downloading a patch (.reg) and importing it using Regedit.

I suspect that most of these problems are due to motherboard problems.

I don't understand exactly what you did in order to correct the problem. Where can I find the maker of my motherboard? When I run a utility it says I have a Dell motherboard, model 0J4020. I was under the impression that Dell didn't manufacture their own boards. Still...would the patch be at Dell for such a problem?

This is a very frustrating problem because the Zen Microphoto works well on both my other laptop (running Vista) and our old desktop (running XP SP2). I have been online working on this for two weeks and none of the solutions offered has worked. Yours is different than any others and I really would like to try it, but I'm not sure how to begin the process.

Any help or direction you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
All I can suggest is that you go to the Dell web site. Do they have a support line/site?

I tend to upgrade rather than buy new PCs, so can just look up the motherboard I bought. Asus had the information I required, but I cannot comment on other manufacturers. Frustrating I know. I really don't want to think about the time I have wasted over this kind of thing over the years-not to mention the time spent searching for a solution to this problem.

If Dell cannot (will not) help, thy searching on the model number and "MTP driver"

Sorry I cannot help further- I wish I could.

Good luck
Dave

Make sure your Windows Media Player installation is complete and uncorrupted. Try reinstalling WMP11 from the Microsoft website (WGA workarounds do not work for this purpose). Also try updating your USB drivers: just delete the existing ones in Device Manager, reboot and let Windows reinstall them.

Hi again,
Dell may get the motherboards made to their specs, or re-badge. There may be something more on the motherboard if you can get to it- I am not familiar with laptops. Dell should have information on their web site if their support is any good. The patch was a .reg file (3USB.reg)- I ran regedit and imported the patch- that was all that was needed.
