After my Mother died, I was given a DVD-R disk which has pictures of her
life. It has the MSWMM file extention. When I put it in my DVD drive, it
comes up with the error message... version not supported. I have windows
movie maker, version 5.1(service pack 3) from version 2.1

Will this not play because it was made on a Vista operating system and I am
running XP? I also tried to play it on my Bose DVD system and it would not
read the disk as it says that format is not supported. I saw a very small
portion of this movie when it was being developed. Would love to be able to
see this beautiful tribute to my Mother's life. I am not able to contact the
person who made this and gave it to me. Thanks for your help.

Several issues involved.

#1) A .mswmm file created on a Vista machine is not
compatible with Win XP.

#2) The .mswmm file is the Movie Maker Project file...
only useful for re-opening in Movie Maker for re-editing
purposes. It does not include the source files...photos,
videos, music...it simply records the path to the original
locations the files were imported from on the machine
it was created on..

#3) The creator of this project needs to Publish (save)
it in a Movie Format (.wmv or .avi) if it is to be shared
with others. The following articles may be useful to the
creator of the project.

Thank you John... unfortunately, it sounds like this disk is useless to me
unless I can somehow contact the person who made it... that's the problem.
But, I appreciate your help and I am going to print out your answer in case I
can reach her. Thanks again.

Yes...that disk is useless unless you have
a Vista machine and all the original source files.

Your sender needs to Publish the project and
then create a Video DVD.

Thanks, John. You know... I have all the pictures. I just found that I have
movie maker on my xp. I think I am going to try my hand at it, as I don't
think I will be able to reach the woman who made it for me. What a waste.
But, then again... this will be a learning experience for me! I appreciate
all your input on this.

If you have all the pictures...you can create a new project.
To save it in the .wmv movie format...use the following steps.

To save as a .wmv movie file...
Type...Ctrl+P to open the Save Movie Wizard /
Choose...My Computer /
Next /
Enter a Name and a Save Location /
Next /
Tick...'Best Quality For My Computer'
Next/
Wait while the movie is saved /
Finish...

And...you might want to try PhotoStory 3 which is a better
app for projects that only contain still shots and music.
