What is mstask.exe and what does it do?

Why can I not find it on my new pc (I have included hidden and system files
in my search)?

Should I worry that I do not have it?

XP works differently. 9x doesn't have services, so it's an app that acts as a service.

Hi David,

Does that mean mstask.exe shouldn't exist now in XP?

Does that mean there should be an .app file?

What is the (basic) difference between the new XP "Services" that I have and
the old 9x "Task scheduler" (that I still have in XP!)?

I'm a bit confused as to whether I should have Windows/ Norton/etc
liveupdates as services or scheduled tasks (I can't find them in either by
the way)?

Thanks for your help with this...

I read http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/mstask.exe.html which
seemed to confirm that I don't need mstask.exe anymore.

However, Norton are insisting that I need it to run their Symantec Netdetect
task which looks to see if there's an Internet connection and when there is
it launches LiveUpdate.

I have not been getting LiveUpdates and have tried to get to the bottom of
it - I seem to be going round in circles - MS tell me I don't need mstask.exe
and Norton tell me I do.

Any ideas please? Thanks, Nook

Disable Norton auto-update features, go in the Norton programs and set
these to "Manual".

Thanks - but doesn't that defeat my objective of having an automatic
liveupdate running in the background that I don't have to go and manually
update all the time...

Oh, sorry, I misunderstood your post. I thought that you weren't and
didn't want to use Live Update. Disregard my suggestion.

John
