I have bought new pc. I have Norton AV and ZoneAlarm installed. I had a list
of programs that were to be allowed access to the Internet, one of which was
mstask.exe.

I cannot find that file anywhere on my pc (have included hidden and system
files in my search).

Seperately, I have been trying to schedule tasks (my Norton LiveUpdate isn't
automatically updating), but receiving the 0x80070008 Access Denied error
that MS appear to know about (read in their knowledge base).

Questions are therefore: should I have mstask.exe? where is it? what does it
do? is this effecting my task scheduler?

(I noted MS advise not to download the hotfix for the problem as they're
working on a solution - I am thus concerned that I am very exposed as I have
to manually update my Norton anti-virus program continually).

Thanks for any guidance.

In Windows XP the Task Scheduler is a service.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

You add, edit, and remove tasks in the same manner as earlier Windows
versions (Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Scheduled
Tasks). Start and stop the service using Administrative Tools ->
Services -> Task Scheduler.
