MSSQL Server

When I bought my Dell computer, it came with MS Office Small Business
Edition 2003.
Although I am not in business, I thought I'd set up Outlook with BCM to see
if there were any options that I may find useful.
After downloading needed update (SP3), and creating database, all seems OK.
During setup I was asked if I wanted to be connected to the SQL Server, I
clicked "Yes", as I understood this to be an access to other databases.
However, I am not sure whether I have to subscribe to such services or even
what they're called.
At the moment I have an icon in my taskbar saying "Unknown - \\ -
MSSQLServer".
Have looked through Help files and searched but nothing specific about SQL
Server.
Advise please?

SQL server is installed on your PC by BCM. BCM uses it to store its
data. There's nothing to subscribe to. I suspect the "Unknown" is your
PC's host name.

I see, thanks.
As I have already stated, I'm not in business but I do want to understand
how BCM/SQLservers work. It's more of wish to learn rather than a need. I
appreciate your reply and would ask you to indulge my ignorance again.

After looking more closely at the icon in the taskbar, it actually says: SQL
Server Services Manager.
When opened, this gives me two text boxes: Server and Services (with Start,
Stop, Pause etc.).
I supposes this enables me to switch between other servers. That's what I'm
not sure about.
What one's are available or recommended to access and how.
I assume some require a subscription. How do you transfer data from a
different database into your BCM database or do you have to (i.e. do you use
Data File Management....to add another DB to you profile?).

The sql service is the process that runs databases.

Having an icon on the toolbar apparently confuses more users than it
helps, so it's disapeered in recent versions. Basically you should
always having it running. If you want to understand how servers and
databases work, I would recommend reading an introductory text on sql
server.

If you want to add data to BCM you should use the Import feature in BCM
itself--look under the File menu in Outlook/BCM. Although it is
possible to add data directly to any database, you are likely to
corrupt it if you don't have a deep understanding of its tables,
columns, and their relationships.

OK, thanks
