I have a new XP laptop (from Lenovo) that came preloaded with the msSQL
service. This is a stand-alone unit that will never be connected to a
network or server domain. Can I delete this service (in Add/Remove
Programs), or at least set it to Manual instead of Automatic in Services
without harming the functionality of my computer?

Do you have MS Office Business Edition installed with the Outlook
Contact Management add-in? If so, that is why SQL is running. If the
answer is yes and you don't use the Outlook addition, you can uninstall
it. If you think you might want it some time, then just stop the SQL
service from running and set it to manual. This assumes you have no
other programs that require SQL (like ACT! maybe?) but if you do, the
manual setting won't hurt anything because the program will start the
service if it needs it.
