MSPaint is listed in start menu but when I click on it I get:

Paint has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience.

This also happens when I run mspaint.exe

I don't know what happened but I have done the un-install, re-install and
even the regedit trick (there is nothing listed in the registry for mspaint)

So how do I fix this without a Windows XP CD?

Download it from here:

It's MSpaint, hlp, and chm for good measure:)

Put them where ever you want and make a shortcut to it.

Tried this?

This is not listed in my registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Applets\Paint

As per my original message. The registry key is not listed at all!

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Applets\Paint

Are you sure? Here is way to confirm if the key is existent or not.

Click Start, Run and type CMD.EXE
Type:

REG QUERY "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Paint" /s

If the key is really missing, you'll see the following error message:

"The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value"

Thank you for the info.

After running this I did get the message

"The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value"

So now what do I need to do?

Does this happen when you start Windows in VGA Mode? If Paint opens fine in
VGA mode (but not in normal mode), the video card driver is causing the
problem perhaps.

I found the problem! It gave me the idea from what I read about VGA mode. It
doesn't work when using an external monitor such as a TV/PC but worked
perfect when I switched back to the notebook monitor. Thank you!

Excellent! I'm glad that helped, and thanks for posting back.
