I see there are several alternatives to MSN Messenger without
the ads and bloat. BUt is there on ewith that one special
feature that keeps bringing me back to MSN?
I don't want bells and whistles and video and sound, but I do
log on using more than one computer... and when I log onto
one, the other automatically puts up a message "press here to
log in again". This is so sensible, about the only sensible
feature MS have ever added ;-)
DO any of the others have this? (Trillian, Easy Messenger,
Miranda etc...)

AMSN is a very good clone of MSN messenger that works for
linux/unix/windows/mac. It was at one point the most active project on
SourceForge which is usually taken by Gaim, another good alternative but
more of an AIM interface.

Try BitWise. It's very lean, has great features, and has nothing to do with
MS, AOL, and Yahoo.

Can I use it to communicate with my MSN contacts?

But do you know if it then warns me if I have been logged out by
another computer and lets me log in again with a single click?
(That was my main question, but unfortunately no one has been
able to answer it...)

I installed it this afternoon and then spent a couple of hours
trying to find out why my network had collapsed. Looks like it
behaves like an IRC virus under certain conditions, bombarding
the net with packets... :-(

I removed it and the problem was gone.

"BitWise does not offer a pure p2p or direct to IP mode"

Is that something that Microsoft, AOL, and Yahoo does?
Added to that I couldn't see how to bar everyone from making contact
except designated people.

You definitely can prevent strangers from messaging you. I think 2 different
ways at that.

But it still doesn't help me communicate with my MSN contacts!

Don't know. I am only interested in direct p2p communications, with
file transfer ability, and security. Such programs have been mentioned
here before but I cannot remember any names at the moment.

Regards, John.
