MSN Messenger problem on Windows Server 2003

I have installed MSN Messenger 6.0 on Windows 2003, and unfortunately can't
sign in. When I attempt to, I get:

"We were unable to sign you into the .NET Messenger service, possibly
because of a problem with your Internet connection. Please try again later"

I do have a valid .NET passport (and underlying hotmail.com account) as I
can sign in from Web pages requiring my passport on this same machine.

I am in a company LAN, so I thought proxy server but if I install the same
MSN Messenger 6.0 on some other Windows 2000 machine on the same LAN and use
the same .NET passport everything is fine.

I am assuming this is because of some obscure new security setting that
comes by default on this new OS. However I didn't see anything in the
Security Audit log that might explain it.

I looked around in the knowledge base, here and on the MSN site to no avail.
Can someone let me know what to try?

Thanks,

Andrew Story

Hello Andrew,

You can delete the stored user names in Windows Server 2003 and then try
again.

To check the stored user names, click Start | Control Panel | Stored User
Names and Passwords.

If the problem persists, please create a new user in Windows and then log
on the computer by using the new user account. Try to logon on Messenger.
Does it work?

Thanks.

Thanks for the response. I tried both things that you mentioned and I still
get the same error message as before. Is there anything else I can try?

Andrew

Hello,

Can you sign in by using another .NET passport on your system?

If the problem persists with the other .NET passport, we need to examine
the Internet connection. If you have enabled Internet Connection Firewall
or the other third party firewall applications, please temporarily disable
them and test.

I tried another .NET passport account to no avail. I also went and checked
the properties of my Network connection and I see that the Internet
Connection Firewall option is not checked. I am working with a basic install
of Windows 2003 server where I have not changed any of the default security
settings. I also have not installed any other 3rd party firewall software.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,

Andrew

Hello Andrew,

Please verify the proxy settings in Messenger and install firewall client
on Windows Server 2003.

How to check the proxy settings:

1. Launch Messenger
2. Click the Tools menu and then choose Options
3. Click the Connection tab

Thanks.

Ok, I am there. Now what do I enter into those options? Nobody else in my
company using other Windows operating systems has to specify any proxy
server setting parameters to be able to sign on, so I am not going to get
any help here.

Andrew

Hello Andrew,

Has the other computer installed firewall client? You can contact the
network administrator to confirm the correct proxy settings.

I can get to the settings, but the real question is what should those
settings be?

Andrew

Hello,

You need to choose the proxy server type and the proxy server name. If you
are not sure about the type of the proxy server, please contact the network
administrator to verify it.

Well I don't think I will have any luck there since their standard is MSN
5.0, which I actually did finally get to work. I just don't understand why
the exact same MSN 6.0 software works fine in the same network when running
on Windows server 2000, but doesn't work on a machine with Windows Server
2003. On Windows Server 2000 I didn't have to specify any proxy server
settings.
