Go into the old messenger folder in c:\windows\program files and rename the
old launch exe of msn to something else.

My last post gave wrong path.
c:\program files\messenger and rename the exe to something else. The main
exe is the one with the messenger icon. Just rename it to anything you like.
It should stop it from starting up. Sometimes it may come back after a
windows update.

My suggestion
- remove the old/original Messenger before installing the new one

So
1) uninstall 7.5 (Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs)
2) uninstall the original version (Control Panel -> Add/Remove
Programs -> Add/Remove Windows components -> untick
3) also check out these
http://www.pchell.com/support/removemessenger.shtml (luv this domain
name - says it all)
http://www.agrreviews.com/modules/sections/index.php?op=printpage&artid=12
4) then re-install the latest version

Fiddly, but tidy.
