On the options dialog under the Connection tab there is an area labled
"Advanced Connection Information" it then says, "You are connected to the
internet through a non-UPnP firewall. (Administrator)

What does this mean?

I do not have XP firewall or any software firewall installed. I am using the
Microsoft MN-500 router with firewall enabled and UPnP is enabled.

TIA

Brian, it sounds like Messenger and/or Windows is not detecting that the
router is UPnP enabled. If you go to Network Connections (Start ... Connect
to ... Show All Connections) do you have an Internet Gateway section with
and Internet Connection icon? If not you might need to enable UPnP on your
computer: "Click Start, then Control Panel, then Add or Remove Programs.
Click the Add/Remove Windows
Components button, and then in the Windows Component Wizard, click
Networking Services and then the details button. Check Universal Plug and
Play then click OK. Then click the Next button and let the wizard complete
its work" (shamelessly plagerized from one Jonathan Kay's many posts)

I hope that helps.

Thanks for writing, John.

That's what prompted me to write in the first place. UPnP has been installed
ever since I installed XP 6+ months ago.

I can see the settings and the open ports from messenger in the properties
dialog of the gateway.

Bottom-line; UPnP is working.

I just signed out of Messenger then signed back in and now it reads
correctly.

You are connected to the internet through a UPnP port restricted NAT.

Personally, I think this is just more messenger flakeiness

Thanks again

Oh, and at the same time messenger was showing me
You are connected to the internet through a non-UPnP firewall.

MSN Messenger 6.1 was showing me
You are connected to the internet through a UPnP port restricted NAT.

Sorry, these were on 2 different computers at the same time. I meant to say:

Oh, and at the same time messenger was showing me on one machine
You are connected to the internet through a non-UPnP firewall.

MSN Messenger 6.1 was showing me on another machine
You are connected to the internet through a UPnP port restricted NAT.
