All the time I'm on the computer, MSMSGS.EXE keeps
reinstalling itself. I go to task mgr and 'end proces'
but a few seconds later it's back. Then I get messages
that new download patches and updates are available.
Since the last few 'updates', my computer runs terrible,
is really hurting for memory, crashes, and so I have no
interest in installing new ones. How do I make this
process stop running.
Older AMD 333 running XP home, 128 MB memory.
Thanx for any suggestions.

MMS'S.EXE is MSN Instant Messenger. You can prevent it from starting with
wimp by clicking on Start/Run type in SCOFFING and click OK then click the
Startup Tab and scroll down if necessary to uncheck msnmsngr. Click
Apply/OK and it'll say that you have to reboot.

However, it is a Catch-22 situation because if you ever start MMS'S.EXE
manually then it puts itself right back into the Startup menu. If you are
sure that you do not want to ever use it then uninstall MSN Messenger in the
add - remove icon of Control Panel. The alternate is to start MSN Messenger
and go into the configuration to tell it not to start with windows and not
to auto-logon.

If you are not on a corporate network it might also be advisable to disable
Windows Messenger, ( not to be confused with MSN Messenger, ) which
unintentionally allows pop ups ads. Advertising companies exploit this
function of Windows Messenger. Right-click My Computer/click on Manage/open
the Services and Applications branch/click the Services branch/in the right
pane scroll down to Windows Messenger/right-click it and click on
Properties/click the down arrow/click on Disable/click Apply/click
Stop/click Apply, ( if necessary )/click OK.

Thanx for the help 'Completely Lost'. I'll try as soon as
I'm off line. Just a home based computer used for a home
based business..
