When I try to open msinfo32 I get a message: "cannot access the windows
management instrumentation sotware"... Is there a way of fixing this? thanks,

Delete the files in the REPOSITORY folders (..\system32\wbem)
(you will have to turn off the winmanagement service to do that)
'net stop winmgmt'

Thanks, Mark. I am going to try that tomorrow Monday 16 Jun. How do I
restore the files, or would WinXP restore them when I shut-off system and do
a cold-start?

Msinfo32.exe Generates a "Can't Collect Information" Error Message:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=323209

If that does not help, try these commands from Start/Run:

regsvr32 %Windir%\system32\wbem\wbemprox.dll
regsvr32 %Windir%\system32\wbem\wbemcore.dll
regsvr32 %Windir%\system32\wbem\wbemsvc.dll
regsvr32 %Windir%\system32\wbem\fastprox.dll

Right, they are rebuilt as needed, it just takes a delay that saving them
avoids. A WMI error is almost always a corrupt repository file problem.

Mark,
I tried your suggestion, and after that Ramesh regsvr32 commands. Didn't
work I still getting the "cannot access the windows ....." in the system
information window. I am getting a message when I close the system info
window "an error ocurred in the script of this page" --
hcp://system/sysinfo/msinfo.htm, Line 6, char 3, error: object required, Code
0.
I also cannot run the windows update with IE6, with "files required to use
Microsoft update are not longer required or installed..." I dowloead and
register the files, with a 100% reply... but it goes back to the "files
required.... etc." and do no update.
When I try to edit the msinfo.htm I get a "missing file c:\css\PCHealth.css."
IE6 might be the problem. Thanks for help and regards, Eugenio

Rames, thanks for your suggetion.
I ran the regsvr32 and they executed OK. I also did the Mark
recommendations. I think the wmi data is OK, and what may be wrong is the
system info display --isn't this part of internet explorer? Thanks,
Eugenio

Ramesh, no, it did not help. I went thru the info and took the actions, but
nothing, msinfo32 keeps on not being able to display information.
I tried the WMIDiag.vbs, and here are the restuls:
Error: WMI ADAP status. I ran the winmgmt.exe /clearadap and /resyncperf.
Error: Error WMI moniker connection, root, ox1AD activex component can't
create object.
Errors external to WMI: Registry info for DCOM, changed COM/DCOM keys have
been changed by some program. I ran regsvr32.exe for ole32.dll and
oleaut32.dll
No positive results. What else can I do? Would I have to reinstall WinXP,
which I am reluctant to do?
Thanks for all your help and insight into the windows magical world.

I ran the comprehensive rebuild method, but no positive results, I am still

ran the

Hi Eugenio,

Can you copy the complete DCOMServer error shown in the Event Viewer and
post here? Note that there is a copy button (with no text, only graphic) in
the Event Properties dialog. Clicking that button copies the event to the

I doing some research I find that that particular key refers to a Norton
Symantec ccEventManager. It seems that there is a Norton WMI Update as part
of Norton 2005. Could that be the corrupted key interfering with DCOM and
WMI?. It also seems that Norton has some information on the WMI Update and I
am going to be looking into. Maybe I can uninstall that Update if present in
the WinXP PC.

Yes, I am going to try to uninstall Norton. It happens to be Corporate
client copy installed in a WinXP Home edition --why I do not know-- the
uninstall in Control Panel/Programs does not finish giving an error. So I
have to unstall manually by deleting keys. Wish me luck. Thanks for great

Rames, thanks for your suggetion.
I ran the regsvr32 and they executed OK. I also did the Mark
recommendations. I think the wmi data is OK, and what may be
wrong
is
the
system info display --isn't this part of internet explorer?
Thanks,
Eugenio

If that does not help, try these commands from Start/Run:

regsvr32 %Windir%\system32\wbem\wbemprox.dll

When I try to open msinfo32 I get a message: "cannot access
the
windows
management instrumentation sotware"... Is there a way of
fixing
this?
thanks,

Ramesh,
I contine with this saga. I manually uninstalled all Norton registry keys
and software. I re-started the PC and then did the comprehensive WMI rebuilt
method, re-started and then I got the same message: "can't collect
information... etc...".

But now I have a different error in the Event Viewer. Now I get a DCOM
error ID 10010, the server {A1F4E726-BCF1-11D1-BF92-00700813D811} did not
register with DCOm within the reqired timeout. That server key I believe is
for WIA Device Manager...?
Also, when I try to open My Computer, it takes some time before it displays
the information. Does this mean there is a problem with device
configuration. I checked the System Properties/Hardrware/DeviceManger and
there is no error in the configuration shown.

Any ideas what I can do next.???? Thanks for the help.

Hi Eugenio,

Can you copy the complete DCOMServer error shown in the Event Viewer and
post here? Note that there is a copy button (with no text, only graphic) in
the Event Properties dialog. Clicking that button copies the event to the
Clipboard.

Ramesh,
I ran the comprehensive rebuild method, but no positive results, I am
still
getting the "can' collect information..." message.
The Event Viewer is showing a DCOM error, something like: "unable to
start
DCOMServer, the system cnnot find the file specified... happened while
starting, and them something either blank or mixed specia characters. I
also
ran the
WIMDiag.vbs with the sale results mentioned in my prior note, with errors
with "....the registry settings of COM/DCOM has been damaged or wrongly
modified..."

I hope you can decypher all the above and come up with the suggestions.
Thanks for your valuable support, I appreciate all this very much.

Ramesh, no, it did not help. I went thru the info and took the actions,
but
nothing, msinfo32 keeps on not being able to display information.
I tried the WMIDiag.vbs, and here are the restuls:
Error: WMI ADAP status. I ran the winmgmt.exe /clearadap and
/resyncperf.
Error: Error WMI moniker connection, root, ox1AD activex component
can't
